LPS weighs in on Obama administration’s directive
The U.S. Departments of Education and Justice released a joint letter of guidance Friday to public schools nationwide urging inclusion of transgender students, most notably transgender bathrooms.

The administration insists that gender identity is protected under Title IX, a provision under the Education Amendments of 1972 that bars schools receiving federal funding from discriminating based on a student’s sex. The statement goes on to say: “This is an important and long-awaited moment in public education”. “By the time these students are at a point where they are asking for our help, they are presenting in all areas of their life as that gender”.
Officials will also be distributing a list of “emerging practices” that advise faculties on using a student’s preferred pronoun, inadvertent disclosures of a student’s status as transgender, etc.

Many school district’s across the country spoke out against the president’s letter.

Supporters of this directive say it’s really just clearing up any questions schools may have had about Title 9.
Sumter County’s school superintendent, Richard Shirley, said, “Another example of an overreaching and out of control federal government”.
“These groundbreaking guidelines not only underscore the Obama administration’s position that discriminating against transgender students is flat-out against the law, but they provide public school districts with needed and specific guidance guaranteeing that transgender students should be using facilities consistent with their gender identity”, he said.
Educators are facing scrutiny and legal action over access to toilets and locker rooms based on gender identity versus a student’s sex at birth. Since the policy took effect in 2013, a few transgender boys have played on boys’ high school teams, said Karissa Niehoff, the group’s executive director.
Shorewood adopted its transgender policy in 2014, only the second in the state behind Madison to do so.
“It would have to be something that the school board completely looked over”.
So far, there have been no complaints, she said.
“If the State of California wants to force it down us, well, we’re always going to obey the law, but my vote can’t be forced by law”, Williams said, referring to enforcing the California legislation already in place.

But sometimes there are mistakes.
