LSU falls to Auburn on the road, 18-13, after bizarre ending

It was a nightmare.

The 18-13 loss at Auburn Saturday night featured numerous things that have driven LSU fans to once again call for the coach’s head, hat and all, on message boards and social media.

After a poor offensive showing for the game, LSU appeared to win on Danny Etling’s 15-yard touchdown pass to D.J. Clark as time expired.

It was a wacky ending that had each team celebrating victory within a minute of one another. He was 19-of-26 with no interceptions, and I think that’s good against that defense.

“I was just making sure it was going to be replayed”, Malzahn said.

The craziness unfolded on that last drive by the Tigers (2-2, 1-1 Southeastern Conference). The clock almost ran out once, but LSU was called for an illegal shift penalty that gave them one more chance. The previous play only stopped the clock temporarily until officials signaled it to start again.

It should come as no surprise, but following last night’s loss to Auburn, LSU has fallen out of the ESPN/USAToday AmWay Coaches Poll.

“I enjoy the fact that our guys busted their tail and put up the ball in fair territory and had a catch to win the game”, Miles said.

Trouble viewing the video? LSU didn’t get the snap off in time for the play because it couldn’t get the snap off in time.

Miles, even, was confused about the play in his post-game news conference. “Every single second we were out there, we competed”. I need to be the head coach and that’s what I’m going to be. “The bottom line is we’ve got to coach our players better, and that starts with me”.

Said Etling: “There was a second left”. This is a live ball penalty, meaning that you stop the clock, explain the penalty call, set the ball, and then wind the clock.

It’s just another wild ending in this insane series. After falling behind, LSU retook the lead at 13-12 near the end of the third quarter on two field goals from Colby Delahoussaye. They lost to Clemson, 19-13, to start the season and to Texas A&M, 29-16, in Week 3. Ole Miss broke a 10-game losing streak in the series dating to 1996.

“I really didn’t know”, Adams said.

Leonard Fournette, LSU’s Heisman Trophy contender at running back, went over 100 yards for the 18th time in his career.

“It was terrifying, just knowing as an athlete, there’s nothing you can do about it”, said running back Kerryon Johnson, who led Auburn with 93 yards rushing. “That, and offense. We’ve recruited well, our defense has always been strong and we have great wide receivers”. Anybody who wants to be down on us after this, they’ve got other issues, because we played so hard. “For us to play as well as we did, it gives us confidence that yes, we can play that kind of game”. “But we were way superior to them”, Williams said of the Minutemen, an independent after departing the MAC.

Kyle Shurmur’s 5-yard pass to Nathan Marcus on the first possession of overtime gave Vanderbilt (2-2) its first lead of the game, and Tommy Openshaw added the point after for the Commodores.

LSU’s offense was held to 338 as Etling was 15 of 27 with 118 yards passing and one touchdown pass to Foster Moreau in the first quarter.

Auburn kicker Carlson hit a 29-yard field goal.

Etling then lost a fumble early in the fourth quarter at the Auburn 31. Yet, if a team has a quarterback that can throw consistently for 200-300 yards per game, it can only help.

Tyler Jones was 17 of 30 passing for 100 yards for the Bobcats (1-2), who have managed just six total points the past two games against ranked teams after beating OH on the road 56-54 in triple overtime in their season opener. “I thought he did a solid job against a good defense”.

Auburn’s Carlson kicked a 29-yard field goal.
