LSU Makes Change At QB, Defeats Jacksonville State 34-13

At about 6:50 p.m., LSU officials said the game will kick off at 7:25 p.m.

Former LSU receiver Kevin Spears, who transferred to Jacksonville State also got his first reception in Tigers Stadium, but it was in a Gamecocks uniform. Last year, LSU’s home and season opener against McNeese State was in a weather delay before being eventually cancelled.

As it is, the LSU coaches don’t trust him to make hard throws (hence only four throws of 20-plus yards), and as long as he is just dumping off screens in the flat, the Tigers offense will remain one-dimensional.

So it was that LSU withstood a couple of ferocious body punches from Jax State early, then used impeccable timing when it came to clock management, an electrifying punt return and superior depth to register a 34-13 victory over the Gamecocks in front of announced crowd of 98,389.

Natson – who sat out last season after transferring from Utah State – and Tindal were teammates at Boyd Anderson High School. He was prepared to re-enter the game, Miles said Saturday evening. And its fan base in not a very good mood.

LSU put in a new quarterback to help the Tigers win 34-13 over Jacksonville State in the home opener at Tiger Stadium. Running back Leonard Fournette had 23 rushes for 138 yards and added three catches for 38 yards. Fournette, who has been slowed by an ankle injury that he suffered three weeks ago, will be a game time decision on whether or not he can play against Jacksonville State. Derrius Guice, making his first career start in place of the injured Leonard Fournette, toted the ball 19 for 155 yards and a touchdown. Tigers fullback Bry’Keithon Mouton punched the ball into the end zone for a two-yard touchdown on the next play, stretching the LSU lead to 20-10 with 1:07 to play in the half.

But Harris came up small (two interceptions) in an opening 16-14 loss to Wisconsin, and Miles delivered the hook after Harris presided over a scoreless first quarter Saturday. His top target a week ago was senior Travin Dural, who hauled in five passes for 50 yards and a touchdown in what was his first action since suffering a season-ending injury against Ole Miss past year. He has failed to live up to expectations and after a dismal start (1-for-4, one shoulda/coulda interception) Miles made the popular choice to bring in Etling for the third possession. The Zips are piecing together five new starters on the offensive line.

In their season opener, the Tigers were handed a tough loss to the Wisconsin Badgers at Lambeau Field. Luke Del Rio threw for 256 yards and two touchdowns in his first career start as the Gators finally pulled away in the fourth quarter. Jenkins has accounted for 66 touchdowns (30 rushing, 36 passing).

1 Victory in seven games against SEC opponents for Jacksonville State. The Tigers lost to Penn State 19-17 in the Capital One Bowl on January 1, 2010; Clemson 25-24 in the Chick-fil-A Bowl on December 31, 2012; Notre Dame 31-28 in the Music City Bowl on December 30, 2014; and Wisconsin 16-14 last week. Harris completed just 1-of-4 passing for a measly 8 yards and was replaced by Etling with LSU down 3-0 in the second quarter.

LSU (0-1) scored twice in a 67-second span of the third quarter to take a lead, and after falling behind again, the Tigers had a first down at the Wisconsin 30-yard line with a minute to play.

Brossette finished as the Tigers’ second leading rusher. By the way, remember when Arden Key set a goal of 20 sacks?

But while Akron will spread the field against the Badgers and do more isolation plays than LSU, Wisconsin’s secondary – save for some different personnel packages – doesn’t expect much of a different approach.
