No. 5 seed LSU had two runners thrown out at the plate in the bottom of the fifth inning and trailed the No. 12 seeded Tennessee Volunteers, 4-0, in the seventh inning of an elimination game of the Southeastern Conference Tournament opener in Hoover, Alabama. The LSU Sports Radio Network broadcast will begin approximately 7:30 p.m. on Eagle 98.1 FM in Baton Rouge and at www.LSUsports.net/live. The Tigers also won 17 of their final 23 SEC games after a 2-5 start in league play. Wednesday’s game will be televised on the SEC Network and streamed on WatchESPN.
“Our team has grown so much over the past couple of months and we’re looking certainly forward to the postseason”, said LSU coach Paul Mainieri. “Because of what this team did to get here and what this team wanted to do, that one really hurts me tremendously as their leader”.
LSU closer Hunter Newman (1-0) picked up the victory as he struck out three and allowed no hits or runs.
LSU had a third runner thrown out at the plate in the seventh inning, but scored three runs in the frame before that to get back in the game.
Cole Freeman scored Deichmann with an RBI single, and Robertson’s run-scoring single plated Freeman to make it 4-3. Tennessee took a 2-0 lead in the fifth off Russell Reynolds and then added two more on two hits off Parker Bugg in the sixth.
