Luas grinds to a halt as pay strike begins
It is Day Two of the 48 hour strike by Luas staff in Dublin.

“We are looking in the region of 70-100,000 people on any given day, in terms of revenue numbers to us as a company, in the region of a €100,000 loss per day”.
Informed sources said it was likely that Siptu would serve notice of further strike action on Luas operator Transdev at some stage next week.
“If this action goes ahead as planned, significant disruption will be caused to those who have come to depend on Luas to get to work and about their daily business”, Mr Donohoe said.
The dispute has already been to both the Workplace Relations Commission and the Labour Court without securing a resolution.
They’re taking the 48 hour action in pursuit of a pay claim of up to 54 percent over the next five years. But Siptu said the strike was unavoidable due to management intransigence and says the union is open to negotiation and to spreading the award over seven years.
“I can see a sustained period of industrial action, with one- or two-day stoppages every week or 10 days, indefinitely”, said SIPTU organiser Owen Reidy.
Normal service is not expected to resume until 6.30am on Saturday morning.

“Transdev remind customers that although there is no tram service it is against the law to trespass on Luas tracks and property”.
