Luc Besson wows Comic-Con with early ‘Valerian’ footage
The 57-year-old French film director has just wrapped up filming for his new sci-fi spectacular – an adaptation of the French comic book series “Valerian and Laureline” which he personally purchased the rights to.

Perhaps the biggest reveal coming out the first day of San Diego Comic-Con was breathtaking footage from Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. Though footage hasn’t been leaked (yet), director Luc Besson previewed part of the film at Comic-Con this week, and the sequence sounds pretty fantastic. “I didn’t expect it at all”. He added that when he told friends what she ends up doing in the film, their jaws dropped.
Besson also engaged in a Q&A session with fans on Twitter, shared some of the pranks that went on set and praised the cast, including Rihanna, whom he called a “gifted” actress.
Speaking of how this film might be received differently than The Fifth Element, which many thought a movie ahead of its time, Besson mused, “Twenty years ago, I was weird and the world was normal”. “Not weirdest, but most complicated”. “To get to work with someone like Luc, who trusts you so much with these roles is really incredible”.

Valerian is drawing interest for its eye-popping visual effects, cool gadgetry, intriguing star-on-the-rise pairing… and kickass suits, which we talked to DeHaan and Delevingne about on the film’s Comic-Con press line shortly following its Hall H panel.
