Chelsea re-signed David Luiz from Paris Saint-Germain on deadline day for a fee of around £30 million, having sold him to the French giants in 2014 for £50 million (The Sun) – a world record fee for a defender.

Koulibaly was one of the best defenders in Serie A last season and Chelsea boss Antonio Conte was desperate to sign the Senegalese global.

“They (PSG) nearly got their money back, two years after he left, for a player who’s two years older”.

Antonio Conte was desperate to sign a central defender and turned his attention to the Brazilian after missing out on Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly and AC Milan’s Alessio Romagnoli. “We had a fantastic story during my first time at the club and I want to help the team and Antonio Conte achieve a lot of success”, Luiz told the Chelsea website.

French journalist Julien Laurens launched a scathing assessment of Luiz’s time with the Parisian club, and labelled him not only a “liability” but also a “worse player” than he was when he left Chelsea.

According to French media outlet L’Equipe it was in fact Luiz’s PSG teammate Presnel Kimpembe who was the desired target for Chelsea before opting to resign the Brazilian defender, on the basis he offered more experience. “I can’t wait to wear the shirt and play in Stamford Bridge again”.

Luiz won the Champions League, Europa League and FA Cup in his three years at Chelsea after joining from Benfica in 2011.

“It’s time for me to win some titles”.

Luiz said: “Did I think I’d ever play here again?”

Luiz is expected to be thrown straight into the starting line-up for the away clash at Swansea City on September 11 and punters may decide to use their free bet on the new arrival making an instant impact.
