Lunchroom employee fired for “theft” after feeding hungry student who couldn’t pay
A woman’s big heart cost her her job serving lunches at a middle school when she says the school terminated her for “stealing” when she gave a hungry 12-year-old who couldn’t afford lunch a free meal.

Ms Bowden was placed on leave pending a meeting of the district school board and a few days later received a letter informing her she had lost her job, according to reports.
“In the spirit of the holidays, the District has been in communication with Ms. Bowden extending an opportunity for her to return to employment with the District”, Howell said.
An online petition for her has more than 54,000 supporters, and continues to grow.
“The District jeopardizes its funding for the Federal Food Service Program if its employees do not follow the proper procedures and requirements”, the statement said.
“We don’t deny students a lunch”, Howell said. After a student exceeds that limit, his or her parents are notified that they need to pay their dues.
She’s hired an attorney and an online petition calling for her reinstatement is growing.
Bowden added that when students are over their lunch overdraft limit of $11, staff were supposed to take their trays away and dump out the food – in front of everyone. She was sacked shortly afterwards for “theft of school district property”.
“I love my job, I really do”, Bowden told the Idaho State Journal.
Students at Nettelhorst Elementary School, on lunch, dig into a salad bar in the school’s lunchroom March 20, 2006 in Chicago, Illinois.
The city said on its Twitter page that Pocatello’s mayor met with the school superintendent on Wednesday and applauded the district’s offer to rehire Bowden. We need to change the policy or change the people making them!’ While we both operate in the same community, the district and City government are two separate entities in Pocatello. The post does not say what law she wants to change. As a matter of fact, National Education Association has found out that missing meals affect a student’s performance and behavior in school.

Bowden said that she has never gotten in trouble before in the past three years that she’s worked at the school other than a verbal reprimand when she gave a student a free cookie.
