Lurie: Kelly didn’t push to stay as Eagles coach
The Philadelphia Eagles will wrap up their disappointing season this weekend against the New York Giants without Chip Kelly as their head coach.

Arizona received 10 of the 12 first-place votes in balloting by media members who regularly cover the NFL. They were eliminated from playoff contention after losing to Washington at home Saturday night.
Lurie told reporters Wednesday it was clear during the Tuesday meeting that his mind was made up and Kelly knew he was being let go.
The team also fired Ed Marynowitz, who was vice president of player personnel.
Tom Donahoe was named senior director of player personnel.
According to ESPN’s Sal Paolantonio, the Eagles top brass wanted to remove personnel control for Kelly, whom the team asked to just focus on coaching. Alonso struggled with the Eagles, while DeMarco Murray, the high-priced free agent Kelly signed to replace McCoy, never fit in Kelly’s offense. But perhaps what stings most for Lurie, the guy spending all the money, is that the team could be that bad at running the ball after giving Murray a $40 million contract, or that they could have a terrible pass defense after giving Maxwell a deal worth $63 million.
Kelly has not spoken publicly, but gave FOX’s Jay Glazer quite a bit of insight into his firing. That’s not the kind of thing you want to bring into a franchise that’s trying to build itself up. He alienated some of his players, though the only ones who spoke out against him did it after they were gone.
“I’m not the general manager”, Kelly said Monday. Upon his departure, McCoy accused Kelly of considering players’ race in making roster decisions, and there were numerous reports that there was a disconnect between the coach and his players. At least when Kelly was around, there was a sense that all those not-good players were part of a grand schematic, and could eventually become good if Kelly’s plan was given time to take shape.
Shortly after Kelly was sacked, Eagles linebacker Emmanuel Acho tweeted: “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely”.
Donovan McNabb piled on, and Cleveland Browns receiver Josh Gordon tweeted: “Shady, Maclin, Foles, Djax”.
The release stated that Lurie “released” Kelly, 26-21 (.553) in three seasons with the team, including 0-1 in the playoffs.
The Eagles were 4-12 in Andy Reid’s last season in 2012.
But the Titans aren’t the only team with a possible coaching vacancy and a quarterback once adored by Kelly when he was at Oregon. In a very short amount of time, Chip Kelly cemented himself as a master of the college football game. It steadily declined the next two years. He’s also the first Eagles head coach since Buddy Ryan in the 1980s to go through three consecutive seasons without a single playoff victory.
In the meantime, I expect his coaching staff and team to respond favorably to this news in preparation for Houston on Sunday and then begin thinking about what more they can provide next season.

The executive vice president of football operations, will assist him in the search for a new coach. His offensive approach worked fantastic in his first year in Philadelphia, but a lack of a running quarterback and numerous injuries since, have caused a slower style of play and helped lead to his departure.
