M’sian varsities in top 50 QS ranking by subject category
The inclusion of three subjects from Malaysian universities in the top 50 category of the “2016 QS World University Rankings: By Subject” reflects the strong position of local universities, especially in engineering studies, said Higher Education Minister Idris Jusoh. It includes 17 Russian universities, taking a total of 71 positions.

The University of Otago has been ranked among the world’s top 100 educational institutions in 13 different subjects.
The University’s Geography department has been ranked third in the world, while Archaeology was ranked fifth. No other New Zealand universities were ranked at 50 or above in these subjects.
As per this survey, UoH has been listed as one of the best universities to pursue higher studies in English Language and Literature, Chemistry and Physics.
Published annually since 2011, the QS World University Rankings by Subject highlights the world’s top-performing institutions in a broad spectrum of individual academic areas such as in arts & humanities, engineering & technology, life sciences & medicine and natural sciences.
UP’s performance was less than stellar compared to last year’s rankings as it had landed places in 8 subjects including Communication & Media Studies, Development Studies, Politics & International Studies, and Sociology.
US universities Harvard and MIT dominate the worldwide rankings, excelling in 24 disciplines and both coming first in 12 subjects.
QS says its rankings are based on the expert opinion of just under 88,000 academics and 55,000 employers, plus analysis of 28.5m research papers and 113 million citations.

Ben Sowter, Head of the QS Intelligence Unit, said: “Though US and United Kingdom remain dominant, our most inclusive rankings yet show that excellence can be found in an ever-increasing number of places”. South Africa leads its continent with Cape Town University 9th in Development Studies.
