M20 reopens completely following bridge collapse

A pedestrian bridge has collapsed onto vehicles on a major motorway in the British town of Kent, after a lorry crashed into it during one of the busiest days of the year.

Another lorry also appears to have been caught in the crush.

It comes as millions head out for Bank Holiday weekend.

The reopening was several hours later than planned, and Highways England said the westbound carriageway of the motorway, which links London with the Channel Tunnel and the Port of Dover, was still closed.

Motorists are facing mounting misery after a pedestrian bridge collapsed onto the M20 closing the motorway in both directions.

No people are believed to be trapped in the debris, however one person is believed to have suffered injuries, not reported to be life threatening at this time, Kent Police said.

Andy Sunnucks, 24, who also saw the incident, said: “We were about 15 cars back on the same carriageway as the collision”.

Traffic is heavier than normal and there are delays on the A20 London Road in both directions between the B2016 Seven Mile Lane at Wrotham Heath and the B2246 Hermitage Lane in Ditton.

Another eyewitness who narrowly escaped the collapse said that the bridge “could have fallen right on top of our vehicle”. The South East Coast Ambulance Service said a motorcyclist in his 50s had been taken to hospital with suspected broken ribs.

“We had to go to the front of the queue to find out what’s going on”.
