On Tuesday, Israel banned the radical wing of the country s main Islamist organisation, accusing it of having instigated violence at a sensitive Jerusalem holy site that preceded the wave of unrest.

Palestinians have accused Israel of plotting to take over the hilltop compound known to Jews as Temple Mount, and to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary.

Since the fatal attacks in Paris last week, both Israeli and Palestinian leaders have sought to compare their communities as victims of terrorism and the other group as perpetrators.

A knife-wielding Palestinian man fatally stabbed two Israeli men in a southern Tel Aviv office building before being apprehended, police said.

Later, at least one assailant opened fire from a vehicle near a Jewish settlement south of Jerusalem before crashing into pedestrians.

Two separate terrorist attacks claimed five lives in Israel Thursday, including that of an American teenager.

Schwartz was from the Boston suburb of Sharon and went to high school in Brookline, Massachusetts, graduating this year.

While the State Department condemned the attack, its spokesman delivered the usual mealy-mouthed preening and called upon “all sides to take affirmative steps to restore calm and prevent actions that would further escalate tensions”.

Palestinian youths threw stones and firebombs while barricading themselves inside the mosque and Israeli police responded with stun grenades and tear gas. “Forces on sight fired towards the vehicle, identifying a hit”, said the army. “If he would have managed to get inside, he would have slaughtered the worshipers”, Vaknin said.

Three people were killed, with at least one of them confirmed as Israeli and another a suspected attacker.

Obama backed Netanyahu in the latest crisis facing Israel, speaking out against recent attacks by Palestinians on Israeli civilians that have sparked fears of a new uprising, or intifada, in the Palestinian territories.

Netanyahu, among others, discussed possible actions in the Hebron area, where most of the Palestinians who carried out attacks recently came from, according to the statement.

Tens of thousands of Palestinians with permits travel into Israel daily and are traditionally perceived as low threat.

The violence has Israelis on edge.

The first attack happened midafternoon in a commercial area of Tel Aviv.

Under interim peace agreements, Israel controls cellular networks in the West Bank.

Palestinian mobile operators Paltel and Wataniya, still using 2G technology and losing money, want to offer 3G to meet surging demand for data bandwidth for social media applications. The agreement won’t enable 4G service for Palestinians, nor will it cover the Gaza Strip.

A video caught the aftermath when Israeli police surrounded the terrorist. The officer was sentenced Wednesday.
