R. Scott Gemmill from “NCIS: Los Angeles” will be on board as well as executive producer and writer, while Henry Winkler will be joining as executive producer alongside Michael Clear, production head for Wan’s production company Atomic Monster. It was produced by Paramount Network Television and distributed by CBS Television Distribution, and CBS is on tap to both produce and air the reboot.
Wan was previously attached to an attempted big screen adaptation of MacGyver that never went through.
A spinoff series, Young MacGyver, was in the works in 2003, but only the pilot was made.
According to the publication, the reboot will follow MacGyver in his early 20s as he is recruited into a clandestine organization where he hones his skills for getting out of tricky situations and averting disasters. As the Verge points out, this plot would have seen MacGyver creating a technology that was desired by multiple parties. Fox is reportedly making a revival series of “Lethal Weapon” in addition to “Behind Enemy Lines“, “Prison Break” and “X-Files”.
