Made in BC – Deadpool obliterates box office records with US$135m haul

The 20th Century Fox film starring Ryan Reynolds as the sarcastic Marvel superhero took the R-rated crown from “The Matrix Reloaded”, which opened to $91.7 million in May 2003. Or at least they should considering Deadpool defied practical logic and tore up numerous box office records en-route to a massive four-day holiday opening weekend haul.

Despite the movie’s R-rated nature, it was able to earn around $150 million for its first four days in theaters.

Main star Ryan Reynolds previously played a much maligned version of the Marvel character in the poorly received X-Men Origins: Wolverine, so fans have been chomping at the bit for a more faithful adaptation. Nobody saw this coming, ” said Paul Dergarabedian, comScore’s senior media analyst.

Meanwhile the thought of another Deadpool cut might seem attractive after the movie scored scored the best opening ever by an R-rated movie in North America.

The U.S total for “Deadpool” easily surpasses the previous President’s Day weekend and February record holder, “Fifty Shades of Grey”, which dazzled the industry a year ago with its $93 million debut.

Among the films released in Taiwan during the nine-day holiday that started February 6, “David Loman 2” was the second-biggest hit with ticket sales of NT$140 million February 5-14. The film sped past an animated superhero of sorts, “Kung Fu Panda 3”, which earned $25.9 million to push its three-week take to $25.9 million.

When someone asked what parts of “Deadpool” are “appealing” to women, Reynolds immediately mentioned the women featured in the film.

Another new release, “How to Be Single”, debuts at No. 3 with approximately $18.7 million. But considering the film only cost $38 million to make, it still has a fair chance to break even. The other movies opening last weekend were the comedies “How to Be Single” and “Zoolander 2”. All this, on a budget of just $58 million, which is a bit slim for a major superhero film.

But overall, the box office is healthy, up an estimated 3.2 percent from past year and it’s all thanks to the snarky, fourth-wall-busting “Deadpool” and its historic debut.
