Madigan can’t attend budget summit, Rauner postpones it

Gov. Bruce Rauner’s administration is reviewing a bill aimed at reopening the IL State Museum after the first-term Republican ordered the closure to save money during the budget impasse.

Clean energy leaders from across IL delivered thousands of petitions to the governor today.

Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan of Chicago suggested the meeting be public.

The governor’s press office says they don’t have any updates to provide on the meeting at this time. Rauner finally agreed but said he would host it and plan the agenda. On Friday, Rauner proposed allowing the public in for brief opening remarks from both sides, then holding negotiations in private. I continue to support an open and public discussion about how the Legislature and the Governor can work together to address the state’s biggest issue: “solving the budget deficit”.

Madigan spokesman Steve Brown said he had not seen the letter and would not comment Friday evening.

A coalition of good-government groups in October called for the meeting and offered to facilitate it to get the governor and four leaders talking again.
