Corey Seager singled past diving second baseman Joe Panik on a two-strike pitch from Javier Lopez (1-3), allowing the speedy Toles to reach third. It’s not particularly surprising to see tempers flare between these rivals, but it’s unusual to see it go to this extent, and it’s especially notable given the prominence of both players involved here. This also may have led to San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy’s decision to pull Bumgarner immediately afterwards despite his seven innings of one-hit, shutout ball and only 97 pitches thrown, which wound up costing the Giants later.

The altercation developed as there seemed to be some sort of eye contact between the two as each team retreated to their respective dugouts, inciting Bumgarner to say: “Don’t look at me.” to Puig.

Giants pitcher Madison Bumgarner and Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig got into a confontation at the end of the seventh inning after Puig grounded out to Bumgarner to end the inning. A wild pitch by Kershaw then allowed Nunez to score easily, giving San Francisco a 1-0 lead. Nunez showed his toughness, fighting through obvious pain to steal second, then take third base on a throwing error by Yasmani Grandal. LOS ANGELES (AP) – The Giants-Dodgers rivalry is still nasty. The Dodgers called up INF/OF Micah Johnson from Triple-A Oklahoma City. Chase Utley is 10-for-31 with a home run against Cueto, who owns a 4-6 mark and 2.93 ERA in 12 career starts against the Dodgers, including a 1.69 ERA in his last three outings.

The Giants led the division by 6 1/2 games at the All-Star break but lost the lead to the Dodgers on August 21.

“He asked me, ‘Why you looking at me?'” Puig said through a translator.

Kershaw gave up an unearned run and three hits in six innings, his third start since returning from a back injury.

Kershaw also walked Gorkys Hernandez in the fourth, a scoreless frame but one that added 23 pitches to his ledger. They play each other five more times over their final 12 games. San Francisco has produced three hits or fewer with runners in scoring position in 47 of 59 games since the break. Dodgers LHP Alex Wood (elbow) will be activated Tuesday and work out of the bullpen.2.

Bumgarner notched the 240th strikeout as a San Francisco Giant, the most by a left-handed pitcher in team history. The team hasn’t decided when LHP Brett Anderson (finger blister, back surgery) will return.
