She went on to dedicate her version of La Vie en Rose to the Pope, saying, “Since Popey-wopey is on his way over here (to Philadelphia), I want to dedicate this song to him”. Fans at the show wondered if the thrice excommunicated icon would bring up the Pontiff’s impending visit.
Telling the audience how both she and Pope Francis were in New York recently, Madonna said, “The pope is stalking me”. Madonna was raised Roman Catholic in Michigan but has faced condemnation from the Vatican throughout her pop career.
Madonna previously caused controversy with her 1989 video for Like A Prayer, which featured images of burning crosses and stigmata.

She was condemned for her 1990 Blond Ambition tour which included simulated masturbation and was criticised for her 2006 Confessions tour after she staged a mock crucifixion only a few miles from the Vatican City. The singer has a controversial history with the Vatican. In December, Italys singing nun, Sister Cristina Scuccia, met Francis and presented him with a copy of her first CD, which features a remake of Madonnas Like a Virgin. Scuccia had won the Italian edition of The Voice earlier that year.
