Maduro boasts start of Venezuela summit despite American pressure

During the 17th NAM Summit, that will hold sessions until next Sunday, Venezuela will receive the pro-tempore presidency from Iran, which will hold for three years.

He said on Monday that the Iranian president will leave Tehran for Venezuela on Friday to deliver a speech at the 17th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit, slated to be held in the island of Margarita on September 13-18, and hand over the body’s presidency to his Venezuelan counterpart Nicolas Maduro.

The NAM is the second largest global body, after the United Nations, with 53 members from Africa, 39 from Asia, 26 from Latin America and the Caribbean besides 17 observer countries and 10 observer organisations.

The Non-Aligned Movement has been dedicated since its creation in 1961 to defend the liberation struggles of the peoples of Africa, Asia, Latin America and other developing nations that have been described in the past as part of the “Third World”.
