The reigning drama champ is Game of Thrones. She previously won Emmys for the role in 2011 and 2012. The British actress had been nominated nine times for Emmys and won three without ever showing up. “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” took home awards for Variety Talk Series and Writing for a Variety Series, and “Girls” won for Guest Actor in a Comedy Series, Peter Scolari.
Amid the deja vu, a few newcomers made it to the podium.
But the top drama acting trophies were far from predictable: Rami Malek of “Mr. Robot” and Tatiana Maslany of “Orphan Black” were first-time winners, both overcoming heavyweight competition.
Why so low? None of the shows or actors who won appear on broadcast TV.
Louis-Dreyfus apologized for what she called “the current political climate”, seven weeks before the presidential election. “We’re not mailing this to her!”
And Kimmel kept the three-hour show moving, poking some jokes at the nominees, including Apprentice producer Mark Burnett.
“Who is to blame for the Donald Trump phenomenon?”
Who says at at 81 you can’t be pretty, witty and bright?
Kimmel praised the year’s offerings, saying “after 68 years, television still manages to surprise us”, while Television Academy chief executive Bruce Rosenblum asserted that “television dominates the global entertainment landscape”.
When Smith wasn’t present for her Emmy win on Sunday, Sept. 18, 2016, host Jimmy Kimmel took the statuette from presenter.
She tweeted through the Masterpiece PBS Twitter account.
Earlier in the show’s opening, Kimmel threatened to take away all of Maggie’s awards if she didn’t personally come to the awards and collect them.
With all of the issues surrounding Brexit since June (and nominations for the Emmys being made in July), it’s not hard to imagine that her owl got lost in transit and she never even learned she was nominated or received a formal invitation to the show.

“I was very astonished and pleased to win the award”, she wrote.
