His publicist said he passed away in the early hours of Thursday at home in Berkshire, with his wife Debbie McGee by his side.

“I’m devastated to hear the sad news that Paul Daniels has passed away”, his statement said.

In the days leading up to his death, it had been reported that Paul had gone home to spend his final days with his loved ones, with Debbie recently breaking her silence on her husband’s illness to thank his fans for their support.

Paul is survived by wife Debbie, 57, Martin, 52, and his brothers Paul, 55, and Gary, 46.

‘Paul and I had no (idea) of how people felt. “Truly incredible. Thank you”.

Born in Middlesborough, Daniels’ casual and self-deprecating style combined with his fresh take on traditional magic made him a household name in entertainment who performed for royalty both at home and overseas.

Paul appeared in the eighth series of BBC One’s Strictly Come Dancing, partnered with Ola Jordan and was the second celebrity to be voted off though he saw the silver lining.

The couple married in 1988, and she continued to be his magic assistant on the show until it was axed in 1994.

His wit, charm, and magic skills earned him a reputation which meant that he performed to Princes William and Harry, Prime Ministers John Major and James Callaghan, Prince Rainier of Monaco and others. He designed the special effects for the stage productions of Cats and Phantom Of The Opera, and was commissioned by the English National ballet to create magical effects for The Nutcracker.

He concluded: “I like Mablethorpe and have been back a few times including to switch on the lights”.
