Geophysicist John Cassidy with the Sidney, B.C.-based Geological Survey of Canada noted the quake was between 50 and 60 kilometres below the southeast coast of Vancouver Island. “We gain more insight into what happened and what may happen in the future”, she said. Washington residents said pictures fell off shelves and the shaking woke them up.All of a sudden, my whole house was out of control, Kellen Lamborn of Anacortes told Seattle television station KOMO-TV.
Tuesday night’s quake, which occurred at 11:39 p.m. Pacific Time near Victoria, rattled beds and dishes according to the Vancouver Sun.
No tsunami warning was issued and the City of Vancouver has said there are no known reports of damage.
The quake, which lasted for several seconds, felt like a large truck rumbling by in the suburb of Richmond, and even knocked over a lamp in an Abbotsford home.
BC Hydro reports no impact to its transmission and distribution network after the shaking.
Fortunately there are no reports of damage or injuries.
And TransLink says SkyTrain service was shut down for about an hour as a precaution.
The early morning quake served as a reminder for the Mayor of Vancouver to tweet out a message about being prepared, and to ensure that residents have supplies and equipment to cover off at least the 72 hour period following the event.
The reaction to the quake on social media was immediate, with people weighing in on where they were and what they felt.
