A strong 6.2 magnitude quake struck central Italy early today near the town of Norcia, the US Geological Survey said. According to local media, the quake was really strong, however there were no immediate reports of damage or casualty.

Strong tremors woke residents in the capital Rome, some 170 km from the epicentre of the quake, which occurred at 3.36am (0136 GMT).

The U.S. Geological Survey put the magnitude at 6.2. There has been a 5.5 magnitude and a 4.6 magnitude aftershock. Another quake hit the northern Emilia Romagna region in May 2012, when two violent shocks 10 days apart left 23 people dead and 14,000 others homeless.
There were no immediate reports of damage, but state-run RAI radio early Wednesday said that people ran into the streets in central Umbria and Le Marche regions shortly after the natural disaster struck just after 3.30 am.

The AP said in Rome people felt swaying in their homes in the city’s center.
