Maharashtra government to regulate app-based cab services
“We expect around 15,000 taxi drivers to go to Bandra in the morning and ask the Commissioner as to why no action is being taken against both these companies, especially Uber, which has eaten a big chunk of our customers”.

Uber has challenged these bans, filing complaints with the commission against Spain and Germany and questioning France’s pro-taxi “Thévenoud law”, which imposes a number of restrictions on licensed professional driver services like Uber.
“In terms of the issue around responsibility between drivers and Uber, who really holds responsibility?”
Michael Solomon, president of Taxi USA, told the Triangle Business Journal that his company still has to pay more in fees while they offer similar services with their app. “The government does what the government does”, Solomon said.
Karsky, along with Councilors Rex Rolfing, Christine Erickson and Greg Jamison, have conducted a series of meetings with transportation planners, the city licensing and attorney’s offices as well as some correspondence with Uber to come up with a compromise.
Earlier, Uber sub-Saharan Africa executives briefed MPs on their technology and the hurdles they encountered operating in South Africa.
However, its competitors argue it is simply a traditional taxi service and should therefore be subject to the same laws as other taxi companies. In addition to that, those vehicles are insured so that if the individual is involved in an accident in a vehicle that was booked using the Uber platform, they will have a claim against that individual’s insurance. “They threatened me saying if we worked today they would smash our vehicles”.
The taxi union in Mumbai is demanding a crackdown on unlicensed chauffeurs partnered by Uber and SoftBank Group backed Ola Cabs. The London-based Hailo app barely lasted a year in the U.S. before pulling out in 2014 because of the aggressive price war between Uber and Lyft. It’s not only to keep up with changing market trends, but it also will ensure the people hailing his cabs are there when his drivers show up.
Anthony Quadros from Mumbai Taximen’s Union said while their taxis did not participate in the strike, they were not allowed to ply and were attacked if they tried to operate their taxis. When an app is used to hail a ride, the software automatically collects payment, essentially committing the customer to paying for the ride, whether they take it or not.

Sources said that aggregators like Uber may not have surge pricing on Tuesday in case there is shortage of black and yellow cabs on roads.
