According to the Division of Public Health, a 76-year-old man from Sussex County with several underlying health conditions died over the weekend in New Castle County.
If you don’t have medical insurance, you can go to a County public health center to get vaccinated. “Our goal in announcing this tragedy is to highlight how risky the flu can be and how important it is to be vaccinated against the virus”.
Dr. Kathleen Spencer has noticed something at the Patton Veterinary Hospital in Red Lion this month. “It remains the best protection for yourself and others and getting the shot often helps reduce the severity and duration of the flu if you do get it”. Despite it being nearly February she is still encouraging people to get their flu shot.
Vaccination is especially important for people who are at high risk of developing serious complications from influenza.
Between Oct. 1, 2017 – when the flu season began – and January 13, 2018, the California Department of Public Health reported 74 flu deaths for people 65 and under.
Across the state there have been 25,497 flu cases since reporting began October 1.
Symptoms of canine flu include persistent cough, sneezing, runny nose, fever, loss of appetite and loss of energy.
Antiviral drugs like Tamiflu, prescribed by a health care provider, should be used as early as possible in people who have flu-like illness.
“Most people including myself and some of my family members wait until something happens”.
The health department says that it’s not too late to get the flu shot and recommends that you do get the shot to help prevent spreading disease. They’re also seeing more cases earlier in the season than usual, which typically indicates a bad flu season.
The dog flu is suspected in two cases last week. And vaccines are by far the most effective when a majority of people in a community get them.
“If you have the flu, don’t kiss your dog”, she said.

Galveston County residents like Philpot are not taking any chances. They kind of just wait until the last minute. “The reality of it is, if they can stay home and get well, they’re going to be more productive in the work place anyway”.
