An air quality alert has been issued for much of coastal ME on Friday.

The National Weather Service says the air quality alert accompanies a shift in the weather pattern, with hot and humid air coming in from the south.

Temperatures are expected to be near 90 degrees on Friday, with higher humidity levels.

Ground-level ozone is a byproduct of emissions from factories, power plants and motor vehicle exhaust. Here are the recommended actions for the public today.

At elevated ozone levels, children, healthy adults who exert themselves, and individuals suffering from a respiratory disease such as asthma, bronchitis or COPD can experience reduced lung function and aggravated lung irritation. You can go to this site and see the current ozone level.

High airborne ozone levels can cause shortness of breath, coughing and throat pain and can aggravate preexisting lung and heart ailments. This surface pollutant should not be confused with the protective layer of ozone in the upper atmosphere.
