Mainpuri : Two labourers beaten to death by police for not paying bribe

Two labourers in Mainpuri, Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav’s bastion, were beaten to death by policemen at a checkpoint for refusing to give a bribe of Rs 100.

Mainpuri district magistrate PC Gupta said the post-mortem report confirmed allegations by the victims’ families that the labourers were beaten to death.

The policement allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 100 for letting the truck go but the driver refused to pay the bribe after which an altercation took place between the two sides.

Infuriated villagers later stormed the Kosma police post and thrashed police personnel, injuring one of them.

The situation got tensed and senior officials rushed to the spot.

The authorities have registered a case of murder against the police post in-charge, two constables and two home guards after the postmortem report.

According to reports, Pankaj Yadav and Dileep Yadav, both in their early twenties, were travelling in a truck carrying bricks, when they were stopped.

They were cousins and residents of nearby Nibri village in Firozabad.

Devranjan Verma, the district’s top police officer said, “We will take action against whoever is involved”.

It has been reported that the police team – led by sub-inspector – allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 100.

While two among the four men managed to fled the scene, police caught and brutally thrashed another two labourers for denying bribe. “The duo jumped from the tractor and ran for safety, but out of fear jumped into a pond and drowned”, said SP Deo Ranjan. They alleged that the policemen had thrown the bodies of the labourers into the pond after killing them.
