Besieged Afghan forces were struggling to head off a complete Taliban takeover of the critical southern district of Sangin on Tuesday, and a new deployment of British troops was rushed in to help direct an increasingly pressed battle across the surrounding province of Helmand.
The recent push by the Taliban comes after an attack near Bagram in the east of the country killed six USA soldiers, one of the deadliest attacks on foreign forces this year, while on Monday, three rockets were fired into Kabul. A British Ministry of Defense assertion late Monday. stated “a little number of United Kingdom personnel” have been deployed to Helmand “in an advisory role”.
Today, the Taliban released a photograph of the bomber they claimed had attacked the Americans.
Andy Allen, a former Royal Irish Regiment member, said he hopes “the sterling work” put in by British forces is not undone by the events which are now unfolding, with Taliban fighters making a bid to capture the town of Sangin. The official was not authorized to discuss the incident publicly so spoke on condition of anonymity.
The spokesman for the Helmand governor, Omar Zwaq, said government troops were able to deliver supplies midafternoon Tuesday to those holed up inside. As we try to find comfort in our community during this time we also extend our love and compassion to the five other USA military families who lost a loved one yesterday.
“In total Britain has around 450 troops in Afghanistan mentoring and supporting the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces and the Afghan Security Ministries”, the statement added.
“We are helpless when there is war going on”, he said.
The Taliban said the reinforcements showed the government’s desperation.
President Barack Obama in October announced that thousands of USA troops would remain in Afghanistan past 2016, backpedalling on previous plans to reduce the force and acknowledging that Afghan forces are not ready to stand alone.
Provincial police chief Abdul Rahman Sarjang said the situation had improved since the beginning of the week but heavy fighting was continuing. He enlisted in the active Air Force in 2002 and transitioned to the New York Air National Guard’s 106th Security Forces Squadron, at F.S. Gabreski Air National Guard Base in Westhampton Beach, New York, in 2008.
By 2010, Vorderbruggen tapped her knowledge of forensic science to become a special agent for the Air Force Office of Special Investigations, a federal arm that investigates felony-level crimes in the USA and overseas. The family lives near Washington, D.C., where the couple was married in June 2012, the year after the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy for gays was repealed.
It said Vorderbruggen, her wife and their son had been a part of the group “nearly from its start” and took “great pride in being members of the military community”.
