Major League Baseball reacts to the death of Marlins star Jose Fernandez

Miami Marlins president David Samson, with the entire team joining him on Sunday, discussed the importance of resuming play Monday as a way to honor Jose Fernandez. The Marlins drafted him in 2011 and Fernandez was in the majors two years later. “It’s a sad day for baseball, really”.

Members of the Philadelphia Phillies participate in a moment of silence to remember Miami Marlins Jose Fernandez before the baseball game against the New York Mets at Citi Field, Sunday, Sept. 25, 2016 in New York. “Just remember how Jose Fernandez risked his life just for the chance to stand for it”.

“I said, ‘You don’t throw me any fastballs.’ And he said, ‘Why would I throw you any fastballs?’ We just started laughing”. We loved him. I spent a lot of time with him in the cages working on his bunt. A Cuban-born athlete, he was wildly popular in Miami and dazzled the league with his strikeout stuff, even overcoming major elbow surgery in 2014 to be the Marlins’ ace starting pitcher.

Though the Mets and Fernandez battled these past four years – and he never lost a start against them – his passion for the game and exuberance won over those in the Mets’ dugout.

The Marlins announced that Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Braves has been canceled.

Showalter said he woke up to the news of Fernandez’s death Sunday morning, and his thoughts went back two decades ago ago, when Indians pitchers Tim Crews and Steve Olin were killed in a boating accident in Winter Haven, Fla. during spring training in 1993. He was one of the best pitchers in the game. “I knew Jose obviously liked to have fun with the game”.

This is a tremendous loss for everyone – because when Jose pitched, you knew you were watching someone special. During the interview the All-Star pitcher explained that his grandmother was the inspiration for his baseball career: “My mom doesn’t know as much about baseball as my grandma”. Naturally, Rodon’s thoughts drifted toward Fernandez when he took the mound on Sunday.

In his first tweet after hearing the news of Fernandez’s death, Gaetz said he was “crushed” by the news. “This is a big loss”. It should be a thing that we carry with us and learn from him.

Collins recalled a young man who treated the kitchen staff respectfully at the 2013 All-Star Game at Citi Field.

“It does pertain to a friend of Jose who is very well connected with several Marlins players and I have stopped that boat before for safety inspections with other Marlins players on board”, Veloz said.
