Since the announcement about Melvin’s departure, the Brewers have also reportedly interviewed Oakland assistant GM Dan Kantrovitz, Rays vice president of baseball operations Chaim Bloom and Pirates director of player development Tyrone Brooks. During his tenure in Houston, Stearns was a member of the brain trust that helped draft, develop, or acquire Carlos Correa, Mark Appel, Lance McCullers Jr, and Evan Gattis. In that role, Stearns assisted in the arbitration process and worked on the league’s Collective Bargaining Agreement. And while Stearns won’t be able to take any of his work from Houston to Milwaukee, he’ll have the benefit of having sorted through a couple years’ worth of experiments in rebuilding in Houston. Then there are the more stereotypical indications that Stearns will be a numbers guy, like his age and his Harvard education. Stearns also has a good reputation within the game.
“There’s several people in our organization that have GM potential, and David’s one of them”, Luhnow said.

While it’s not totally clear how Stearns plans to turn things around, Brewers’ fans should get a better sense of his strategy Monday.
