Major League Baseball trade deadline: Brewers’ Jonathan Lucroy vetoes trade to Indians
The Cleveland Indians are close to acquiring catcher Jonathan Lucroy for four prospects, according to multiple reports late Saturday. A trade widely reported as virtually a done deal that would have sent Lucroy to Cleveland fell through Sunday when he vetoed the deal. With speculation about his eventual destination taking place throughout much of this year and being withheld from the lineup in recent games, the team’s intentions had to be clear to Jonathan Lucroy. Fans even made a hashtag and everything to encourage Lucroy to waive the clause, but apparently he doesn’t like the idea of getting a haircut with Matt Underwood. In return for being traded to Cleveland, Lucroy requested the Indians take away the 2017 club-option on his contract.

Lucroy offered to accept the deal if the Indians would agree not to exercise his $5.25 million option, but the Indians rejected it. According to sources, Lucroy would have said yes to the deal if being guaranteed the starting catching job through 2017.
The deadline for trades without waivers is Monday. One of the popular names has been catcher Jonathan Lucroy.
Into his 7th season with the Brewers, Lucroy made the All-Star for the second time in his career.
Lucroy is the living example of how unpredictable the trade deadline can be. “Rebuilding is not a lot of fun for any veteran guy”, he said. That’s the same team which, as Bates reminded us, treated Hamilton poorly publicly and privately after he had a relapse with drugs. We do believe in the group that we have here.
The Rangers will likely need to deal two to three major prospects to land Lucroy, and one will likely be a catcher like Jose Trevino, who is rated as the 25th-ranked prospect in the Rangers’ farm system. Travis d’Arnaud is very strong at the plate, but Lucroy’s capabilities far outweigh his, which will certainly boost the team’s offensive capabilities. “As of right now, I’m still a Brewer and I’m going to be until somebody tells me differently”. But the Mets were still talking to the Reds about Jay Bruce, whom they had almost acquired at last year’s trade deadline before getting Yoenis Cespedes.

“I still expect the next 36 hours to be interesting and eventful”, Counsell said. “I’ve lived it already (with Gomez) so I don’t count on these things until they are done. We were aware that was a possibility”. That’s why you wait.
