Makkah crane tragedy: Death toll of Indians rises to 11

More than 100 pilgrims died in the crash on Friday.

Prof SA Shukoor, special officer, Telangana State Haj Committee, and Syed Omer Jaleel, secretary to minorities welfare department, are in touch with the Indian Consulate General in Jeddah. This is in addition to the two women who were reported dead on Saturday.

Abdul Khader, 38 and his wife Fatima Begum, 32 hailed from Machilipatnam in Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh.

Indonesians and Indians were among those killed when the crane collapsed, and the injured included Malaysians, Egyptians and Iranians.

At least 19 Indians are injured, though it is unclear if any others are still missing.

Saudi authorities have ordered a probe into the accident that occurred less than a fortnight before the annual pilgrimage starts. Ten persons out of 83 were still missing.

The number of Indians who died in Friday’s crane crash at Makkah in Saudi Arabia has risen to 11, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said here today.

The additional nine people who died were on Sunday identified as Mohd Hanif, Tabassum, Hassan Kharaj, Zafar Sheikh, Zakira Begum, Mohammed Abdul Khadar, Fatima Begum, Shameem Bano and Khader Bee.

Swarup said the officials from the Indian Consulate in Jeddah have been on the ground and have set up a 24X7 helpline to provide information and assistance.

The ministry, Mr Swarup said, was extending all help to the families.

Many of the pilgrims, leaving in groups organised by the operators, will travel to Saudi Arabia around September 17, five days before the Haj rites begin.

A total of 5,436 pilgrims left from Hyderabad embarkation point through the Haj Committee. The official Haj mission will return on September 27, when many pilgrims are also expected to return. They include 2,963 from Telangana, 1,819 from Andhra Pradesh and 654 from Karnataka.
