The Melaka United player was one of two players admitted to hospital when a lightning bolt struck the goal posts he was standing close to.

A young Australian goalkeeper has died after being struck by lightning as he left training.

Scans revealed Cerebral Hypoxia Ischemia, caused by a lack of oxygen supplied to the brain.

“I was shocked when I was told of the news”, club vice-president Khairi Anuar Ahmad said.

A second player, 21-year-old Muhd Afiq Azuan, was also injured in the lightning strike, but regained consciousness and is expected to make a full recovery. “He was very jovial, a good boy, liked by his team-mates and always wanted to be better”.

The remains of Petrovski arrived at Melaka Hospital at about 6.50pm.

Malacca signed the former Sydney Olympic trainee for their 2016 Malaysia Premier League campaign after Petrovski received his Malaysian passport through his mother’s heritage in Sabah.

Football Federation of Australia was also saddened by Petrovski’s death.
