Residents who stop looking for work are no longer counted as unemployed but are still recorded by a survey used to gauge the unemployment rate.

That was 2 full percentage points better than 6.5 percent reported for July 2014.

Among the state’s 88 counties, preliminary July 2015 unemployment rates ranged from a low of 3.3 percent in Mercer County to a high of 9.9 percent in Monroe County.

The number of employed people in the city of Springfield fell to 57,857 in July from 58,841 in June.

The state’s unemployment stats are based on a monthly survey of approximately 3,100 households in New York.

For the fourth month in a row when compared to the same month past year, the number of people working in St. Lawrence County went up while the number of people receiving unemployment went down. Randolph County ranked 43rd in the state last month for unemployment, down from 39th in the state in June.

The figures show the labour force for the second quarter of this year increased 1.4% to 27.14m year-on-year.

The number of employed people was 344,761 in July 2015.

“Through 2014 and in early 2015 a lot of the improvement in the unemployment rate was due to a decline in the labor force”, she said.

On the county level, the only data available is not seasonally adjusted.
