The complaints, filed in Los Angeles, allege a complex money laundering scheme that the Justice Department says was meant to enrich top-level officials of a government-controlled Malaysian wealth fund.

Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (IDEAS) chief executive officer Wan Saiful Wan Jan said Najib’s position as the prime minister can not be threatened by any outside powers.

Here are some answers to key questions in the saga.

The US has now joined several other countries, including Switzerland and Singapore, where similar investigations are ongoing into the workings of 1MDB fund.

A cabinet minister said on Thursday Malaysia has nothing to hide and that “1MDB has been the subject of an unprecedented politically-motivated attack, the objective of which was to unseat a democratically-elected head of government”.

The lawsuits also named Najib’s friend, Malaysian financier Low Taek Jho, or Jho Low, and Abu Dhabi government officials Khadem al-Qubaisi and Mohamed Ahmed Badawy Al-Husseiny.

The regulator said in May that it is closing the Singapore unit of Lugano-based BSI for breaches of money-laundering rules in relation to its 1MDB probe.

Malaysia’s prime minister said he is serious about good governance and vowed to “fully cooperate” with a US investigation into a $3.5 billion scandal involving a state fund he headed.

The Malaysian government “should be conspicuous about making clear that they’re committed to transparency and good governance, and the kind of rules that will encourage people who are considering investing in Malaysia’s fast-growing economy to have confidence that they can do so fairly”, Mr Earnest said.

How did the scandal emerge?

In total, the 1MDB fund amassed approximately $11 billion dollars worth of debt.

A source familiar with the investigation has confirmed that “Malaysian Official 1” is Najib.

What are key allegations by U.S. investigators? Another $330 million was re-routed to his accounts in 2011.

Mr Najib’s stepdaughter Azrene Soraya Abdul Aziz – born to his wife Rosmah Mansor and her first husband – also posted on Facebook that her brother Riza “chose, like many others before him, to have fame, wealth and adulation”. The film company, Red Granite Pictures, which Riza founded with Joey McFarland in 2010, received $155 million in loans from 1MDB, much of which went to finance the movie, according to the Wall Street Journal. Low is known to be a close associate of Riza and his stepfather.

– Also acquired were a Monet painting for $35 million, a Van Gogh for $5.5 million, a $35-million Bombardier jet and a $100 million stake in EMI Music Publishing, according to the United States filing.

Najib has sacked critics of the scandal within his ruling United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), including members of his cabinet.

But former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said on Thursday Malaysians should push for a referendum on Prime Minister Najib Razak’s leadership as he launched a new opposition front that Anwar has endorsed.

He denies they came from 1MDB, saying they were a “gift” from the Saudi royal family.
