Maldives president declares state of emergency as turmoil deepens
Foreign Minister Dunya Maumoon said the declaration of a state of emergency meant that a rally planned by the main opposition force, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), for Friday was unlikely to be allowed.

He has been arrested for allegedly planning to kill President Yameen Abdul Gayoom in an explosion on his speedboat on September 28. It also says the government can temporarily suspend certain constitutional rights during the emergency, but may not restrict freedoms such as the rights of free expression, free press, and fair and transparent hearings. “The most valuable lesson to be learnt as we commemorate our Victory Day was that there were conspirators in our country and overseas, who discreetly and openly desired to destroy the peace and harmony of our country”, the president added.
A motion to remove Mr Adeeb was backed by every member of parliament present in the chamber.
Amnesty worldwide is calling on the government to provide careful justification for their decision to proclaim the state of emergency and any specific measures it includes.
The US FBI, which investigated the blast, said it found no evidence that it was caused by a bomb.
Police had accused the station of uploading a YouTube video that reportedly showed three masked men issuing a death threat to the president with the flag of the Islamic State group in the background.
The global community’s not happy with Yameen’s government right now.
Yameen has moved quickly to crack down on those suspected of disloyalty, with Vice President Ahmed Adeeb detained in connection with the boat explosion and now facing impeachment. The Emergency has been declared on the basis of Article 253 of the constitution of Maldives stating threat to the national security of Maldives.
Yameen was unhurt but his wife and two aides were injured in the blast, which the government quickly said was an assassination attempt.
The U.S., the Commonwealth and rights groups have called on the Maldives to lift its state of emergency and end a crackdown on dissidents.
It warned that political protests have been taking place since the arrest of former President Nasheed earlier this year.

The strike comes after President Yameen proclaimed a 30-day across the country highly sensitive situation on Wednesday, refering to dangers to national security and raising apprehensions of impending assaults.
