WASHINGTON, United States-President Barack Obama made the short but sentimental drive across Washington on Friday to attend his oldest daughter’s high school graduation.

“I’m going to be sitting there with dark glasses, sobbing”, he told TV host Ellen DeGeneres earlier this year.

Obama grew up without his father, who was born in Kenya and is now deceased, and has spoken of his desire to be there for his kids.

Congratulations are due for Malia Obama, who somehow managed to go through high school with the world’s most protective parents. First lady Michelle Obama has said that Malia wants to be a filmmaker. Their younger daughter, Sasha, turns 15. The soon-to-be 18-year-old landed an internship last summer-working on the set of HBO’s hit series “Girls”.

Secret Service put up some magnetometers so that the attendees could be screened at the private high school Sidwell Friends in Washington DC.

The Obamas have not disclosed plans for her “gap year”, but delaying college could keep her close to her tight-knit family as it prepares for the end of Mr Obama’s presidency in January. As the president wraps up his a year ago in office, he said the prospect of Malia leaving is the most stressful.

Three months into White House life, Malia got the long-awaited puppy: Bo, a Portuguese water dog that was less likely than other breeds to aggravate her allergies. Her sister, Sasha, also attends the school.

At school, Malia played soccer and tennis, the flute and piano. Both girls get themselves up early every day to get ready for school, the first lady has said. “She’s ready to make her own way”.

Braces appeared when Malia was 12. At Jimmy Fallon’s NBC “The Tonight Show” he explained that Malia was “very eager to get out” of the White House. “That was the thing Michelle and I were most anxious about when we got there, we thought how is this going to work we’ve got these butlers and you’ve got guys saluting, and it’s a testimony to Michelle and my mother-in-law that they have turned out to be just incredible kids”.
