Meanwhile, the fun side of President Barack Obama was again on show on Saturday as he made his final appearance at the White House correspondents’ dinner.

As part of her college search she visited several Ivy League and liberal arts schools on the East Coast, the New York Times reported.

“I was asked if I would speak at her graduation and I said absolutely not”.

It’s official – after a well-documented college application process, the White House announced Sunday that Malia Obama is going to Harvard!

When Malia enters college next year, she will have had time to re-adjust to life outside the White House, according to the New York Times. “I don’t want them to think, ‘Oh, I should go to these top schools.’ We live in a country where there are thousands of fantastic universities”.

He also joked that Michelle Obama is eager to “stay closer to her plot of carrots”.

The president is a 1983 graduate of Columbia University, and Mrs Obama graduated from Princeton in 1985.

“Regardless of why they took the year off or what they did, students are effusive in their praise”, Harvard says on its admissions site.

The president and first lady have said they will not return to Chicago, where they have a home, but will remain in Washington after his term ends in January.

“The one thing I’ve been telling my daughters is that I don’t want them to choose a name”, Mrs Obama said in a recent interview with Seventeen magazine.
