Mall gunman at large, terrorism not suspected

Authorities said the Target store is on lockdown.

Local and state police officials were not immediately available for further comment but were expected to hold a news conference later on Saturday morning.

The suspect was described as a Hispanic male in his late teens to mid-20s with a close-shaved haircut. This new information came after Sergeant Mark Francis told people to “stay indoors” and “stay secure” at an earlier press conference, reporting that the gunman left the scene before authorities arrived. The FBI said terrorism was not suspected.

A second vigil is planned for 5 p.m. Saturday at Central United Methodist Church, 1013 Polte Road in Sedro-Woolley. Our hearts are in Burlington where a shooter has taken the lives of at least four people.

Gov. Jay Inslee said tragedy had struck the state.

Witnesses described chaotic scenes and confusion when the shooting started.

A woman told them to evacuate and he grabbed his 5-year-old daughter and he and his wife ran outside and across the street.

He said everyone was terrified.

Cars parked at the mall can not be retrieved until sometime Saturday.

He said he went home Friday and made sure his doors were locked because the gunman remained on the loose.

He fired multiple times in the department store, striking four women and one man, who ranged in age from teenager to seniors, he said.

She said she heard screaming as they were escorted out into the parking lot in Burlington.

“Then I heard seven or eight or more, and I just stayed quiet in the dressing room because it just didn’t feel right”, she told the Herald.

Burlington residents gathered Saturday to mourn the victim’s of Friday’s shooting at the Cascade Mall. They have not been identified.

Burlington is a city of about 8,000 people, but its population swells to several times that as people visit the mall and area outlet stores during the week.

She said he could see police at the doors with assault rifles and said they were no longer guarding the doors as of 9:30 p.m. They searched “every room and every nook and cranny”, said Lieutenant Chris Cammock, commander of the multi-agency response team conducting the investigation. The four female victims died in the store. The shooter remains at large.

The Washington State Patrol said that the man who killed five people in a mall shooting was taken into custody Saturday. The identities of the victims have not been released, pending notification of next of kin.
