In the wake of last week’s massacre in San Bernandino, Califo., and other recent mass shootings, the president called on Congress to ban gun sales to people on terrorist watch lists.

A state senator on Friday said he would introduce legislation that would ban individuals on the federal terrorist watch list and the no-fly list from purchasing guns in NY. If you can’t fly without clearing government watchlists, you shouldn’t be able to buy a gun. It would also check those catalogs against the names of current gun permit holders and revoke licenses of those found on the lists.

Malloy’s is seeking information from the federal government on the watch list before signing an executive order barring anyone on a government watch list from receiving the safety permit needed to buy a gun in CT, including handguns, shotguns and any ammunition.

Lt. Governor Nancy Wyman said, “Connecticut has stood as a national model, demonstrating that common sense anti-violence initiatives can both respect the rights of responsible gun owners while protecting the public health and safety”.

This has prompted officials in CT to take steps to restrict the ability of individuals on the no-fly list to purchase guns, ahead of what they perceive as Congress’s inaction. Numerous appeals, he said, are granted because there may have been “a mistake in the paperwork or some other thing had happened”.

“Of course federal legislation is necessary”, Malloy said. Additionally, background checks and training are required for the purchase of all categories of guns. “Overwhelmingly Americans agree with that”.

The New York State Legislature will return to Albany in January. “Overwhelmingly, people want to see some level of background checks”, he insisted.
