Auburn is coming off a 31-10 victory against Memphis in the Birmingham Bowl.
He was announced Wednesday as Auburn’s defensive coordinator after just one season at LSU.
Auburn named former LSU Defensive Coordinator Kevin Steele as its newest defensive coordinator on Wednesday.
Dellenger reported that if Steele did leave Auburn that the school and defensive coordinator would split his buyout of $500,000. A high-placed source on the LSU football staff said the Tigers wanted to keep Steele and were, at least at first, attempting to work out a deal to retain the first-year coordinator.
He’s had a number of other coaching stops, including coaching linebackers for the NFL’s Carolina Panthers. During his time there, the Cornhuskers had a record of 60-11 overall and went to six bowl games.
Clemson won the 2011 ACC title, its first since 1991, before allowing 70 points to West Virginia in an Orange Bowl loss to complete that season.
LSU’s total defense ranked 27th in the country (347.2 yards per game) and 19th in rushing defense (122.9 yards per game).
Jeff Steele is an associate athletic director for facilities and operations at Auburn with oversight of all department’s athletic facilities. His deal was unusual because of its length: two years.

For the second straight off-season, LSU is in the market for a defensive coordinator. In 2010, the Tigers led the ACC in defense and ranked No. 13 nationally in points allowed.
