Man buns are making young men go bald, say experts

Like Donald Trump and Donald Trump’s hair, “man buns” are the subject of fierce disagreement these days. But as anyone who’s had to go in for repeated waxing treatments knows, it’s really, really, really hard to damage your roots so badly that they’ll never grow hair again. “Traction alopecia in men is becoming more common”, she told Mic. Man-buns, despite how chic many believe them to be, are partly to blame for the newfound prevalence of this issue for men. But, according to doctors that trendy top knot could have some serious consequences on your hairline. The Huffington Post Australia spoke to the David Salinger, director of the worldwide Association of Trichologists, on the subjects of man buns and hair loss. The condition, which causes acute baldness around the forehead and temples, is a direct result of hairstyles that pull the hair over long periods of time. Those particularly at risk of damaging their hair follicles, are people who wear very tight styles on a regular basis.

Since men joining in on the trend is kind of a new thing, they probably won’t see the full effect of traction alopecia for several years. “It’s a bit early, they might be starting to get some thinning”.

She added: ‘Unfortunately, once the hair follicle is damaged, it doesn’t grow back’. Not only that, but the tightness can bring on migraines so bad that Ibuprofen is required.

The condition isn’t specific to men, and overly tight hair pulling can cause problems regardless of gender.

Dr Sullivan said: ‘There are lots of men who wear man buns and don’t get traction alopecia. So, if you were thinking about moving on from a man bun to man braids, you might want to think twice. Of course excessive pulling on your hair is going to make it fall out.
