Tiana Carruthers, the first of eight victims allegedly shot by accused gunman Jason Dalton on February 20, testified this morning.

Tiana Carruthers, who reportedly was shot three times after putting herself between the shooter and some children she was taking care of, was the first witness to take the stand on Friday morning. She fought back tears as he went on about the black bags.

Deputies then grabbed Dalton and forcibly removed him from the courtroom after a struggle. He had to be dragged out of the courtroom while she screamed.

Dalton was led into the courtroom around 9:45 a.m. Friday with chains wrapped around his midsection and handcuffs around his wrists.

Last month, Dalton was found competent to stand trial.

Police have quoted Dalton as saying a “devil figure” on Uber’s app was controlling him on the night of the shootings. She approached him as he walked up to her children, who playing in front of their townhome, and shot her several times, police said.

Later, Richard Smith and his 17-year-old son, Tyler, were shot and killed while looking at vehicles at a auto dealership.

Carruthers told the court that she and the others were walking through the parking lot when a silver SUV almost struck them.

A teenage girl was also critically wounded in the spree.
