Two men were arrested in Salem Tuesday on weapons charges and charges of intimidating police officers according to multiple reports citing the Essex County District Attorney’s office.

Authorities said one of the men referenced previous cop shootings and they were listening to a police scanner via a cell phone app.

Mendoza, who told police he was discharged from the military, allegedly made reference to recent police shootings as he got out of the auto and “aggressively” approached the officers.

Based on comments made about police being “shot all over the country” and a refusal to obey commands, police said they believed he was trying to intimidate the on-scene officers.

In Mendoza’s vehicle, officers said they found a Smith & Wesson M&P15 rifle, several 30-round magazines, a.40-caliber Smith & Wesson handgun, and four Klonopin pills.
