A 25-year-old man was killed when he tried to escape a stalled elevator in a Lower East Side apartment building late Thursday, police sources said.

The victim pushed a woman out of the elevator before it fell down the shaft.
“The elevator started going down and he pushed her out”, the man tells the Daily News. “They stepped out and he stepped out and when he stepped out, the elevator just came down and it just crushed him”.
He was rushed to New York Hospital in “traumatic arrest” at about 11:54 p.m, an FDNY spokesman said.
WABC’s Kala Rama reported that there are three active violations on the building’s elevators from the New York City Department of Buildings.
One resident named Alberto said there have been issues in the past with the elevator. The victim, identified as Stephen Hewett-Brown, of the Bronx was at a New Years Eve party. (The accident occurred close to midnight.) Another person tells CBS New York that “the elevator started falling really, really slow”.
