As forensics officers inspected the scene, a green fuel container, a fire extinguisher and a number of personal items could be seen – before being carried away in evidence bags.
The man was discovered outside the London address for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge at around 3am today.
Three hours later, officers were called to a site near the locked parks of the palace, located in Kensington Gardens in central London, after reports of a man acting suspiciously.
“Officers attended and found a man, believed to be aged in his forties, ablaze”.
Police say they’re not investigating the case as “terrorist-related”, and the Duke and Duchess were not home at the time.
Police said a central London hospital called them shortly after midnight (7 p.m. ET Monday) when a man in their care failed to return to the facility.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman confirmed police had been contacted by the hospital before they found the man at the palace. The parents of Prince George, 2, and Princess Charlotte, 9 months, have another home in the English countryside of Norfolk, England, known as Anmer Hall.
