Man dies after being shot by Tulsa police on a city street

A Tulsa man fighting for his life in the hospital this morning after confronting two men who may have been breaking into cars at an apartment complex near 41st and Garnett, Tulsa Police said.

Tulsa police say a man who was shot by an officer in the middle of a city street has died.

Police say a auto was discovered blocking the road around 7:30 p.m., near 36th Street North and Lewis.

“They continued to talk to him and he continued not to listen and not to follow any commands”, police said.

The victim, who was not identified in the release, had been shot once in the leg. Officers applied a tourniquet while waiting for medical services, the release states.

Just blocks away from the Tulsa Police Department’s Gilcrease Division, a man is tazed and shot by Tulsa Police. Police spokeswoman Jeanne MacKenzie said she believes the officers’ dash cameras might have captured video of the shooting.

Online court records show Terrence Crutcher of Tulsa with the same date of birth as the man who was killed pleaded no contest in 1996 to carrying a concealed weapon and resisting an officer and was given a six-month suspended sentence.

Tulsa has a troubled recent history of police relations with the African-American community. The deputy said he mistook his handgun for a stun gun.

Neighbors told police there have been several auto break-ins there so this early this morning a few of them went outside to see if anything was stolen.
