Cross-Channel swimmer Nick Thomas has died after attempting to swim between Dover and Calais.

Mr Thomas, who lived in Ellesmere, Shropshire, described himself as a “Endurance athlete, iron & ultraman triathlon for many years” on his Twitter page.

Freddie Iron, joint victor of Channel 4’s SAS: Who Dare Wins, posted on Facebook: ‘Absolutely devastated to hear that Nick Thomas has tragically passed away on his solo channel swim attempt last night. “Our thoughts are with his family”. “Keep swimming my friend”, he wrote on Facebook.

“He was doing what he loved doing”.

So incredibly sad to hear of the passing of @trismartnick.

“There was an extremely experienced support team on board the support vessel”, the spokesman added.

“It is an extreme sport, we know the risks”.

Thomas, an Englishman, successfully completed a swim across the Channel in 2014.
