The dead man has not been identified by police, but neighbors said his name was Travis Quay.
Authorities say the person shot on the officers with a crossbow and hit the deputy.
A state trooper then shot the suspect at least once, the station reports.
Police were serving an warrant for felonious assault on a 40-year-old man when he used the crossbow, state police said.
This is an unfortunate, tragic situation but certainly highlights the dangers that our law enforcement officers face everyday. The deputy was airlifted to a local hospital where his condition has stabilized.
State police “policy permits officers to point or discharge a firearm in self-defense or defense of another when he or she reasonably believes there is imminent danger of death or great bodily harm”, Sweeney wrote in a news release.
Cato Township is about 50 miles northeast of Grand Rapids.

State police from the Sixth District Special Investigation Section are involved in a complete investigation of the incident, Sweeney said.
