Thomas McCary was arguing with a woman Sunday evening when the woman’s brother Patrick Ewing walked over to see what was going on, as stated by police.

Ewing provided cover fire allowing the other man, his sister and the baby to retreat as McCary fired at them again.

In an act of self-defense, Ewing pulled out his gun and shot back at McCary three times.

With a gun in each hand, McCary resumed shooting at Ewing, Walker and her 1-year-old son, and Asia Young, police said.

McCary was taken to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where he was arrested at 2:30 a.m. He was treated, released and booked into the Hamilton County Jail by 3:42 a.m. McCary is scheduled to face a judge Monday morning.

Luckily, Ewing had a permit to carry a concealed weapon. Residents with concealed carry permits have reportedly jumped by as much as 50 percent in 2015. Truitt said he has had more female students enroll ins his myriad of firearms training courses and noted that the ladies make great students because many are novices and have not picked up any “bad habits” in their shooting techniques.
