Man in serious condition after shark attack in Kailua

CNN affiliate KHON says he was bitten on the left foot and is hospitalized in serious condition.

We would like to inform you not to bathe in the waters of Oahu, as shark attacks have severely injured two men today.

In an interview with Honolulu’s Star-Advertiser, Dr. Brian Jones, who was in the area when the attack occurred, said that the man had sustained severe injuries to both of his legs.

Authorities notified swimmers and cleared Kailua, Lanikai, and Mokulua beaches.

“We were surfing out there. It’s pretty insane”, Kyle Kaiser told the TV station.

“I kind of see the shark and I’m underwater and the shark is on me so, i kind of push off the shark with one hand and kind of punch it with the other and I swum up”, says Cook. Bowthorpe says the 10- to 12-foot tiger shark was persistent and he hit it a few times with his paddle as he helped pull Cook onto his back. “I couldn’t believe it”.

It is the second shark attack on Oahu this month.

A Rhode Island native who lost most of his left leg to a shark in Hawaii last week is breaking his silence.

Kaiser remembers last year’s shark attacks happening in October, even referencing a 2003 incident when Bethany Hamilton, a professional surfer, lost her arm in a shark attack off Kauai.

Cook says it happened so fast he didn’t realize right away what was going on. The attacks occurred within eight hours, so it is hard to predict when and where they will strike.

KHON2 does not have any records of any shark attacks in Waikiki, and neither does the state’s online listing which dates back 20 years.
